Family Day at the Music Center

An extraordinary day: City Hearts students enjoy Le Corsaire Ballet,
perform Shakespeare, take photos, and meet Cindy Crawford.

On Saturday, July 13, City Hearts students took part in Family Day at the Music Center. It was a very special day for the children and perhaps one of the best City Hearts events ever. Nearly 50 students and their families traveled from Oxnard. Besides seeing the Ballet, they performed "Scenes from Shakespeare." Their amazing acting held the audience for over 35 minutes in sweltering heat. Elementary students did a maypole dance outside and then a couple of Elizabethan dances on the stage. Cindy Crawford introduced them and talked about City Hearts. She was gracious and gorgeous, and the students couldn't quite believe they were seeing Cindy for real! Le Corsaire, with lavish costumes and sets, and impeccable dancing, amazed the children – it was the first time most of them had seen a major ballet company performance. The children will remember it for many years. Thank you to everyone who made it happen. Students from our Para Los Ninos Photography group took pictures of the Shakespeare performance, and wrote their experiences. We invite you to enter the world of our students, below….

When I went to the performance I saw a play and it was really great!!! I took a picture of “Juliet.” Those kids were funny in the story. They had a lot of things there and there were projects. There were a lot of kids there. I took a lot of pictures of them rehearsing in the play before they began to act. They were really good I would like to give props to them. It must have took them a long time to rehearse and study their lines.

Going to the Music Center and watching the play made me feel like a real photographer because I took a picture of Cyndi speaking about City Hearts and the play. But what I like best is when we went to watch the ballet because it was so interesting, I mean interesting. When I saw the ballet it made me so interested that I started liking ballet.

In that day I was really something, I mean, those pictures I took, they were really exciting, I mean the 2 girls I took the pictures of, well, they were something, I can’t quite describe.

Going to the performance was fun and interesting, the play was good and it wasn’t boring and they worked hard after the perfomance. When they were practicing they were funny. I took this picture even when there was a big head in front of me I liked it because the kids that were performing got my attention because they were funny and looked funny too. Then this kid came out like a girl and it was funny. After we saw the ballet it was interesting and they dance with their tippy toes.

Going to the Music Center and watching the play made me feel so artistic and happy to see that they were happy acting. They were so good. I got the chance to take a picture with Cindy Crawford which was really cool. I also got to take a picture with her, but the bad thing was that it didn’t come out right. I had a great time that day and I hope to have one of those days again.

Going to the performance was really fun and interesting. The performance was about Shakespeare. The good thing was that I was able to see Cindy Crawford. I took pictures of her and the performance. I also enjoyed seeing the ballet.
